Welcome to the EDGE, our Jr High (Middle School) Ministry at St. Philip the Apostle Church. The EDGE is a Catholic middle school youth ministry experience created for early adolescents in grades six, seven, and eight. The EDGE is designed to meet the educational, spiritual, emotional, and social needs of young adolescents.
At this age middle school youth are open to good and bad behaviors as well as positive and negative ideas. Many of the values and beliefs that they held as children are now questioned and challenged. As young adolescents they are trying to figure out who they are and what they believe.
In many respects middle school kids are on the EDGE because so much is going on in their lives physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially. It can be a very stressful and difficult time for them and their parents. As a Catholic community we are going to give our middle school youth the EDGE they need in life: Jesus, the Word, the Eucharist, and the Church!
Our EDGE nights occur every Wednesday evening of the school year except for special holidays. The EDGE also has social, recreational, and service activities designed to create a greater sense of community among our middle school youth and for the kids to have fun and enjoy themselves in a church setting. The EDGE also meets periodically during the summer vacation.
The EDGE nights are designed to reach the youth the way they remember best: through small and large group discussions, through personal experiences, and through teaching others. Each semester we focus on a different theme, such as the Saints and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Every night we concentrate on various aspects of the theme to help the youth gain an understanding and appreciation of what the Catholic Church teaches and believes, as well as develop an identity in the youth as being a vital part of the parish community.
With approximately 100 participants divided into small groups at the same grade level, we are confident that the young people will also develop strong friendships that will help strengthen their faith, and be a support during these difficult years and throughout their life.
